Amsterdam school lottery coming up!
Was your child born between 1 September and 31 December, 2015, and do you live in Amsterdam?
Don’t forget to apply for a primary school on Wednesday, 6 March 2019 the latest!
You should use the application form that the municipality (Gemeente) sent you by regular mail around the time that your child was 2.5 years old. If you have lost -or never received- the application form, you can download a new, blank form here.
On this form you rank at least five schools in order of your preference. Please note that this only applies to schools that take part in the central lottery (not the eenpitter schools).
Once you have completed the application form, you deliver it in person to your first-choice school on MARCH 6th the latest. If you use the blank form, you’ll also have to submit proof of your address, and proof of your child’s date of birth.
Normally it takes two weeks till you hear the outcome of the lottery, either by email or regular mail. They give you two weeks to confirm whether you want your child to have the place. If you don’t confirm, it will be assigned to another child.
Most children start primary school the day after their 4th birthday, but they are obliged to go to school from age five.
In this video I explain how the lottery system in Amsterdam works.
